I AM ABLE
HELLO
I AM ABLE...
to help individuals with disabilities to be valued by the community. Furthermore, their disability will, hopefully, be seen as just another kind of difference, like culture, ethnicity, or gender. Devaluation and limitation of potentials of persons with disabilities in our society will be minimized or even put to an end. We believe that we need to be strong enough as an individual and stand together for individuals with disabilities in order to bring more happiness to our malevolent world.
ABOUT ABLEISM
It is widely documented that people with disabilities experience ableism. To define, according to Linton (1998), ableism includes ‘overt discrimination against people with disabilities’ and it is also the ‘notion’ where people with disabilities ‘are inferior to non-disabled people’ which exhibits ‘character flaw’. The act of ableism, similar and analogous to racism, is also found in many forms, which according to Olson (2019), includes ‘lack of disability rights laws’, the implementation of ‘seclusion or restraint’ among students with disabilities, and the stigma in the community where ‘people with disabilities want or need to be fixed’. More common causes of ableism that we all may observe are the absence of disabled-friendly public facilities such as buildings with no braille signs, tactile paving, nor wheelchair-friendly chairs. These instances, which abled-body people take for granted, surely limits the opportunity for people with disabilities to access offices, educational institutions, homes, public transport, and so on. In consequence, this will lead to them being unable to access such basic human rights (i.e a person who uses a wheelchair cannot attend a school which does not accommodate the access for wheelchaired students, thus this person cannot pursue education and his or her prospects may be limited).
